Whether it’s everyday foot pain or chronic disorders that just happen to get worse without warning, foot pain is quite common during the winter months for several reasons. Today Dr. William Buffone of North Fork Podiatry/Three Village Podiatry is sharing information regarding the top three reasons.

Why Is Foot Pain So Common in Winter?

During the colder winter months, your feet often hurt worse than they did during fall for several reasons; here are the top three:

Cold weather: Cold weather can be a pain in several ways. While your body may be shaking on the outside, it may be wreaking havoc on the inside in the form of aching joints, bones, and muscles. Cold weather has a tendency to aggravate foot conditions such as heel pain, plantar fasciitis, and arch pain.

Unsupportive shoes: During the summer, many of us wear sandals and flip-flops more than we probably should, but they are not great for our feet. They are flimsy, provide no arch support and add strain on tendons and muscles with each step.  This can result in overstretching, tearing, or inflammation of the plantar fascia.

Added holiday weight: Not only can added weight cause obesity, but it is also associated with an elevated risk of foot pain, which can lead to other conditions such as plantar fasciitis. The added holiday weight also causes pain by putting extra strain on your arches which tends to irritate and stretch your plantar fascia.

How To Overcome Winter Foot Pain

While we can’t fast-forward through winter, we can overcome winter foot pain by:

  • Not walking barefoot;

  • Performing daily foot stretches;

  • Using custom orthotics or over-the-counter arch supports for added arch support;

  • Resting the feet as often as possible.

Remember, any type of pain is not normal, so if you feel that your winter foot pain is getting in the way of your normal daily activities, it’s time for a checkup! Contact the office of Dr. William Buffone of North Fork Podiatry/Three Village Podiatry right away to schedule an appointment.
