Preparing Your Feet for Fall

Fall is officially here, and aside from the obvious measures, you probably don’t consider your feet too much as the weather cools down. Because we recently celebrated the first day of fall, today Dr. William Buffone of North Fork Podiatry/Three Village Podiatry is sharing important information regarding how to prepare your feet for fall.

Get rid of hard patches. Hanging out on the beach and going without shoes or even just walking around your yard causes your feet to become hard and calloused. And while that works well during the warmer summer months, it leaves your feet unattractive and scaly when winter comes. The remedy is quick and easy: Use a pumice stone to rub the scaly, harder skin until your skin looks and feels the way you want.

Moisturize to soften your skin. If you have cracked or peeling skin on the soles of your feet and your heels? Use an intensive moisturizer to keep them as soft as a baby’s skin. For the best effect, do this when you step out of the shower.

Trim your nails. Be sure to file and clip your toenails. While doing so, if you notice any unusual colors beneath your toenails, consider seeing your podiatrist to determine the cause.

Consider using coconut oil for deep conditioning. As the air gets drier during fall and winter, your feet need hydration to be at their best. Apply coconut oil to give your feet deep hydration.

Continue to wear sunscreen. In some areas, you’ll need to continue wearing sunscreen on the top of your feet if they are exposed to the sun.

It’s pretty clear that fall foot care doesn’t take a lot of work. You just have to keep a few small things in mind.
